(Autorenreferat)... view less

'The Catholic Church is looking for its place in today's pluralist and democratic Poland, but it has failed to find it yet. It is having difficulty defining its relationship with the potential institutions of the new democracy, especially with the legislative and the political parties, but also with the social organisations, the media and the 'West'. At the same time, the impression that the Catholic church is energetically attempting to set up an orthodox state in Poland has become firmly established in Western Europe in recent years. On the basis of selected problem fields and conflict areas, the present report examines the on-going political debate within Poland on the Catholic Chuirch's relationship with the open society and with the legislative. The Church's position with regard to the topics of 'elections' and 'legislation' since the demise of the communist regime can be seen as typical examples of the identity crisis pervading Poland's dominant Christian denomination. The sources used for the study are Polish publications from the political, media and academic scenes.' (author's abstract)... view less
