(Autorenreferat)... view less

"For many centuries meat has been regarded as a status symbol of men, whereas low-energy fruit and vegetables have come to embody female abstinence and modesty. The rise of 'doing health' as a social structure category takes the gender typification of chicken as a starting point for attaching prestige to healthy nutritional behaviour. A discourselinguistic sampling analysis of the construction and use of gender stereotypes in meat commercials shows that irony is used as a (construction-concealing) discourse strategy together with the corresponding pictorial language (product name, constitution of sex/gender system, stereotyping). The conspicuous use of the verb 'to know' reveals the impact of a health-related power-knowledge complex." (author's abstract)... view less
