"Why is it that the Arab spring came as a surprise to the majority of western observers? To answer this question, it seems necessary to first of all understand the general perspective of the West, the Mubarak regime, as well as Al-Qaida on the Middle East. It will become obvious that the discussion needs to let go of false dichotomies like tradition vs. modernity, secularism vs. religion, etc. By examining typical and oftentimes implicit presuppositions about the Middle East and Egypt in particular (such as the non-existence of a civil society), a differentiated perspective on liberal democracy and the varieties of political movements which produced the Arab uprising can be achieved."
