"In this essay we investigate the concept of 'disgust' through the example of the 'disgusting other' as seen from a modern and postmodern theoretical viewpoint. We show how the different orientations of the two forms of thought are clarified if our gaze is fixed on the 'other' in light either of 'normality' or 'abnormality'. The postmodern perspective is disgusted by normalcy, while the modern feels revulsion for deviancy. Our work investigates the fundamental reasons for such weighty differences arising between the two standpoints." (author's abstract)... view less
