"Der Beitrag lässt sich von Georg Simmel zu einem kommunikationstheoretischen Modell moderner Konkurrenzen inspirieren. Mit Simmel begreift er Konkurrenz als triadische Form, in der mindestens zwei Konkurrenten um die knappe Gunst eines Dritten streiten. Die Konstruktionsvoraussetzungen moderner Konkurrenzen bleiben in Simmels formalsoziologischem Modell jedoch offen. Öffentliche Kommunikationsprozesse, so die diese Lücke schließende These, lassen sich als Konstrukteure und Taktgeber moderner Konkurrenzen begreifen. Sie konstruieren Konkurrenz, indem sie das Verhalten zahlreicher Konkurrenten als Leistungen interpretieren und Vergleichsschemata einführen, die die günstigere Bewertung mancher Leistungen von der ungünstigeren Bewertung anderer abhängig machen. Das Publikum tritt dabei zunächst nur als Fiktion öffentlicher Kommunikationsprozesse auf, wird aber als solche zur notwendigen Bedingung der eigentümlichen Temporalisierungs-, Universalisierungs- und Globalisierungsdynamik moderner Konkurrenzen. "The article uses a critical reading of George Simmel’s sociology of competition in order to develop a communication theoretical model of modern competitions. Following Simmel, it understands competition as a triadic form where at least two competitors compete for the favour of a third party. In contrast to Simmel, however, whose “formal” sociology focuses on universal characteristics of competition, the article also deals with the specific characteristics and social conditions of modern competitions. It argues that modern competitions can be conceived as products of public communication processes (public discourses) that decide on the criteria and scarcity of the public’s favour. Although “the public” is only a fiction of public discourse, it also proves to be the very real condition of the complexity, temporality and globalization dynamics of modern competitions. In this sense, publics emerge as the genuine third party and centrepiece of modern competitions, explaining why Simmel liked to speak of competition as the fight of all for all."
