Regain of trust or the return of an illusion? A call for sensible mistrust in face of systemic tautologies

(Autorenreferat)... view less

"The lass of trust in the context of the actual crisis is widely deplored. But how deep were the roots of trust after all? This article argues that the financial system, even in times of well functioning, was affected by deep mistrust, masked by a mere illusion of trust, evolving from processes of self-reference. A self-referring rationale, lacking external normative reference, is at the root of individual, institutional and systemic failure. The call for more or better morals, often seen as means to overcome the crisis, will fall short of its desired effect. There is a need for sensible mistrust and ethical competence of responsible people. This might bring us a step further to more stable financial markets that nerve, rather than threaten, the stabile of societies on a global scale." (author's abstract)... view less
