"Corporatist arrangements were revitalised and transformed in the European Union in the course of the 1990s. This development arose from a two-fold process of reorganisation. Part of this was due to the modernisation of the European economy which was driven by market and competitive pressures. Part was driven by specific forms of concertation and compromise building at firm, national and European levels. Existing systems of regulation and conflict resolution were therefore exposed to increased pressure from competition, but without challenging the participation and involvement of employees and trade unions in principle. However, as the new forms of social concertation and corporatist interest inter-mediation are mostly structured asymmetrically, their effectiveness remains precarious."
