"Working life is increasingly influenced by the growing importance of knowledge-based work and results-oriented forms of control and coordination. Consequently, the systems of work regulation and interest representation, which developed in industrialized societies and were mostly designed to meet the representative and protective needs of industrial workers, no longer seem adequate. Based on empirical research in the German IT-industry, the authors describe the new types of work regulation emerging in this sector and try to present them systematically. In addition, they show how the industrial relations actors, notably the trade unions ver.di and IG Metall, view the organizational problems they face in the present situation and what kind of strategies they are developing to meet the demands of new target groups."
