Review Essay: Das "Politische" in den Science & Technology Studies. Eine Replik auf: Niklas Alexander Chimirri (2012). Review: Michalis Kontopodis & Jörg Niewöhner (Hrsg.) (2010). Das Selbst als Netzwerk. Zum Einsatz von Körpern und Dingen im Alltag (The self as network: on everyday uses of bodies and things)

Abstract

"Zum Abschluss seiner fundierten Auseinandersetzung mit den theoretischen, epistemologischen und methodologischen Aspekten unseres Buches 'Das Selbst als Netzwerk' (KONTOPODIS & NIEWÖHNER 2010) wirft Niklas Alexander CHIMIRRI (2012) eine Frage auf, deren Beantwortung wir innerhalb unserer kleinen deutschsprachigen Einführung ins relational-materielle Denken nicht im Detail leisten konnten: 'Does the relational-materialist perspective (…) strive for emancipatory transformation, or plainly said, for improving the everyday life of people?' Um auf diese Frage zu antworten und die von Niklas Alexander CHIMIRRI angeregte Diskussion weiterzuführen, werden hier 1. die verschiedenen Konnotationen des Begriffes des Politischen in den Science & Technology Studies unterschieden und eingeordnet, 2. die zentralen Tendenzen der Expertisedebatte und der Biokapitalismuskritik wie auch die zentralen Merkmale von ontological politics identifiziert und 3. die Zusammenhänge zwischen Ethik und Politik im Rahmen von Science & Technology Studies diskutiert. Mit dem Ziel, weitere Arbeiten in diese Richtung anzustoßen, wird somit den deutschen Leser/innen ein Überblick über internationale Debatten zu dieser Thematik dargeboten." (Autorenreferat)

"At the conclusion of his in-depth discussion of the theoretical, epistemological and methodological aspects of our book 'The Self as Network' (KONTOPODIS & NIEWÖHNER, 2010), Niklas Alexander Chimirri (2012) raises a question that we could not have addressed in sufficient detail in our small introduction to relational-material thinking - namely, 'Does the relational-materialist perspective (...) strive for emancipatory transformation, or plainly said, for improving the everyday life of people?' To address this question and continue the discourse stimulated by Chimirri, 1. the different connotations of the political in Science & Technology Studies are distinguished and classified, 2. the central tendencies in the debates around expertise, biocapitalism and ontological politics are identified, and 3. the relationship between ethics and politics within Science & Technology Studies is discussed. This overview aims to stimulate further work in this direction by sketching the international debates on these issues." (author's abstract)
