Kinderlosigkeit in stabilen Ehen

Remaining childless, despite a stable marriage

(Autorenreferat)... view less

"In most cases, couples marry with the intention to form a family. None the less, an increasing portion of marriages remains childless in the long run. The analysis of childless couples at the end of their fertile phase, i.e., after having been married for 16 years, shows that the majority of them did not make a deliberate decision against children. Rather, this outcome has been caused by the postponement and the subsequent failure of making a decision in favour of getting children. Retrospectively, some couples regret this. When comparing childless couples with parents, it becomes clear that the former were (a bit) more concerned about possible obstacles, including barriers for their professional career - resulting from parenthood than parents were. Also, these couples expected smaller benefits from parenthood. As panel analysis shows, it is necessary to differentiate this group of childless couples internally: different paths in life that resulted in the absence of children stem from a variety of motivations that, in turn, lead to differing coping strategies. Thus, some of the couples that unintentionally ended up childless are satisfied with their life course by all means, whereas some do regret not having set the agenda differently."
