"In this article the current State of research in instability of marriage and divorce is tried to be outlined. Besides the functionalistic Interpretation of the problem the contributions of the Exchange Theory and the Economic Theory of the family concerning the explanation of this phenomenon are analyzed and critically discussed. As a result it turns out that both theories share a number of essential communalities and similar difficulties of empirical proof. Especially the theoretical determination of an optimal combination of individual properties for a permanent and stable relationship and the argument of the efficiency of intra-familiar division of labour cause few problems."
