The ninth meeting of the Junges Forum (Young Planners' Forum), held in Darmstadt from May 17th to 19th 2006, was dedicated to the instruments of planning in the face of current processes of social, technological and economic change. Which instruments have a future? Why is this topic still - or once again - of such current relevance? The key issues for planners to address today are shrinkage, the development of metropolitan regions, and science cities. However, in this context the tried-and-tested instruments of planning are of limited usefulness. How can planning accompany and guide current developments in society and in the economy in a way which is both appropriate to the times and efficient? In four working groups, the Junges Forum provided an opportunity to discuss questions of how to guide development processes, various strategies for dealing with these important developments, and the efficiency of modern information and communication technologies. In addition to more fundamental questions, four topic areas were dealt with at greater depth: 1) Sustainable guidance through co-operation, communication and participation. 2) Regional knowledge, learning regions - strategies and instruments for knowledge-based urban and regional development. 3) Formal planning instruments at a dead-end? 4) Information and communication technologies: an opportunity to modernise traditional instruments of planning?... view less
