There is a critique against the main stream in psychology, which claims that essential aspects of human beings such as their sociability and their historicity are neglected. It says that we are in need of alternatives. In this situation Karl Bühler's idea of a crisis in psychology becomes apparent. According to Bühler, this crisis consists in the disintegration of psychology into different schools of thought. Thus the unity of psychology becomes a central task. The doctrine of the primacy of method which dominates academic psychology is discussed and a new orientation towards the primacy of adequacy is proposed. This gives rise to the demand for a psychology which is based on anthropology. The postulate of the unity of psychology makes it impossible to use traditional philosophical anthropology uncritically; we need, rather, a philosophical anthropology which reflects the actual research of the neurosciences. The paper entails a sketch of how this can be done in regard to Edelman's project for a science of recognition. The consequences of this research for psychology which support the critics in essential points are drawn and perspectives for the future are elaborated.... view less
