On blurred borders and interdisciplinary research teams: the case of the "Archive of Mourning"

Abstract

Hauptgegenstand dieses Beitrags ist das "Archivo del Duelo" [Archiv der Trauer], ein Forschungsprojekt, das sich mit Trauerritualen in öffentlichen Räumen nach den Bombenattentaten in Madrid am 11. März 2004 befasst hat. Ausgehend von dem gewaltigen Ausmaß dieser öffentlichen Trauerpraxis und der Bedeutung der Attentate für die spanische Gesellschaft begann eine Gruppe von Forscher/innen des Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas ein Projekt, in dem die Gedenkstätten, die an Bahnhöfen errichtet wurden, dokumentiert und untersucht werden sollten. Durch das doppelte Anliegen, nämlich Dokumentation und Forschung, war das Projekt von Beginn an interdisziplinär konzipiert und zusammengesetzt, und wir berichten von dieser Zusammenarbeit von Bibliothekar/innen, Anthropolog/innen und Literaturwissenschaftler/innen.

The main objective of this article is to present the "Archive of Mourning," a research project that focuses on the mourning ritual practices in public spaces that took place after the train bombings in Madrid on March 11th 2004. Due to the magnitude of these public mourning rituals, the impact of the bombings in Spanish society and the variety of voices expressed at the stations, a group of researchers working at the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) started a project to document and analyze the memorials at the stations. The twofold objective of documenting and analyzing the memorialization practices made this research project an interdisciplinary endeavor from the beginning; an initiative in which librarians, anthropologists and literature scholars collaborated.

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar el "Archivo del Duelo", un proyecto de investigación que se centra en las prácticas rituales de duelo en espacios públicos que tuvieron lugar después de los atentados del 11 de marzo de 2004 en Madrid. Debido a la magnitud de los atentados, a su impacto en la sociedad española y a la variedad de voces que se expresaron en las estaciones de tren, un grupo de investigadores del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) comenzaron un proyecto para documentar y analizar los memoriales de las estaciones. El doble objetivo de documentar y analizar las prácticas memoriales hizo que fuera una iniciativa interdisciplinar desde el comienzo; una iniciativa en la que colaboraron bibliotecarios, antropólogos y expertos en literatura.
