Interpreting photographic portraits: autobiography, time perspectives, and two school photographs

Abstract

Dieser Beitrag versteht sich als Begleitartikel zu der allgemeinen Diskussion in "Fotografische Porträts: Narration und Gedächtnis" (ROBERTS 2011). Ich versuche mit dem Folgenden zu der gegenwärtigen Auseinandersetzung mit visuellem Material beizutragen, indem ich einen spezifischen interpretativen Ansatz zu fotografischen Porträts verfolge, nämlich zu Selbstporträts, Bildern also, die wir selbst oder andere von uns gemacht haben, allein oder in einer Gruppe, informell durch Verwandte/Bekannte oder professionell durch Fotostudios. Ich nutze hierbei einen (auto-) biografischen Fokus und frage, wie wir solche Selbstporträts betrachten und sie mit Erinnerungen, aktuellen Erfahrungen und Vorstellungen von Zukunft verknüpfen. Als Beispiele verwende ich zwei Schulfotografien von 1956/1958, als ich sechs bzw. acht Jahre alt war, und unterziehe sie einer Analyse, die "Zeitperspektiven" und einige verwandte Konzepte beleuchtet. Ich bediene mich in diesem Zusammenhang zweier Narrative: erstens der Kommentierung der beiden Fotografien vor dem Hintergrund meiner kindlichen Entwicklung (z.B. körperlich, intellektuell) im Alter von sechs bzw. acht Jahren, und zweitens mit Blick auf mein gegenwärtiges Aussehen und meine gegenwärtigen Aktivitäten, die ich mit den Erinnerungen zu verbinden versuche, die durch die Fotografien ausgelöst werden.

This article is a "companion" piece to a more general discussion in the preceding article, Brian ROBERTS' (2011) "Photographic Portraits: Narrative and Memory". Here the attempt is to enhance current attention to visual materials by exploring a particular interpretive approach to the photographic portrait—self-image—images taken of us by ourselves or taken by others (portraits taken by friends or relatives, or by professionals), alone or as part of a group. The article is autobiographical in focus; it explores how we "look" at personal photographs and associate them with memories of our past, our current experience, and the future. It uses as examples two school photographs taken in 1956-8 of me (the author) aged six to eight years old and applies a form of analysis employing "time perspectives" and a range of associated concepts. Two narratives are given: first, a commentary on the two school photographs and my childhood development (e.g. physical, intellectual) between six to eight years old, and second, my current outlook and activities and how they connect with the memories raised by the photographs.

Este articulo es una pieza "auxiliar" para una discusión más general en el articulo previo, Brian ROBERTS (2011) "Retratos fotográficos: Narrativa y memoria". Aquí la intención es enriquecer la atención actual a los materiales visuales explorando un acercamiento interpretativo particular a las imágenes en retrato fotográfico – autoimagen – hechas por nosotros mismos (auto-retratos) o tomadas por otros (retratos tomados informalmente por amigos, familiares o profesionales), solos o como parte de un grupo (retratos tomados informal o profesionalmente). El artículo está autobiográficamente enfocado, explora como "parecemos" en las fotografías personales y cómo las asociamos con recuerdos de nuestro pasado, experiencia actual y futuro. Toma como ejemplos 2 fotografías escolares tomadas en 1956-8 de mi (el autor) a la edad de 6 a 8 años y usa una forma de análisis empleando "perspectivas de tiempo" y una gama de conceptos asociados. Se presentan dos narrativas: primero, un comentario sobre las dos fotografías escolares y el desarrollo de mi infancia (por ejemplo, en lo físico e intelectual) de los 6 a 8 años y, segundo, mi perspectiva y actividades actuales y como se conectan con los recuerdos generados por las fotografías.
