(Autorenreferat)... view less

'It is being widely assumed in the media today that too much participation in consumer culture teaches excess and immoderateness to children and youth. Based on individual cases, generalizations are drawn, which should confirm such impressions. And indeed, there have been massive shifts in the conditions and circumstances of growing-up. The article describes the historic change in childhood, youth and education, and presents the thesis that while it appears unavoidable that children and youth must get involved with the conditions of consumer culture, they should not become 'excessive'. This victim theory fails to recognize how children and youth deal with learning tasks in their world of experience and how they concretely adjust and adapt to consumer culture. There is no 'unavoidable' connection between consumption and immoderateness.' (author's abstract)|... view less
