'A multivariate regression model explaining the perception of 30 physical und social incivilities in residential areas is tested with survey data (N = 3612). Perceptions of these incivilities are measured in terms of perceived frequency and the severity of an incivility. Indices for incivilities using product terms (frequency x severity) are constructed. The results of the regression indicate that local social capital (trust, social ties) and personal as well as indirect victimization are good predictors of different indices of physical und social incivilities. Considering incivilities as negative externalities, i.e. as 'public bad', different strategies implemented to prevent incivilities are discussed.' (author's abstract)|... view less
