'The theory of social classification is a helpful tool for the analysis of struggles about the symbolic order of social inequality. The author elaborates this idea and introduces some elements of action theory into the Durkheimian notion of classification. Examples, taken from a research project in two German cities, point out significant semantic patterns of 'negative classifications' that are presently used by Turkish social climbers and their autochthonous neighbors in order to stigmatize each other. Some concluding remarks examine the impact that such interethnic classification struggles have on the opportunities for integration among the affected individuals and social groups.'
