Forschungsprogramm der Abteilung "Kulturelle Quellen von Neuheit"

Abstract

"In diesem Discussion Paper wird im ersten Teil das Forschungsprogramm der Abteilung 'Kulturelle Quellen von Neuheit' entwickelt, im zweiten Teil folgen kurze Beschreibungen von insgesamt neun Projekten. Neuheit, so die zugrundeliegende Annahme des Forschungsprogramms, bildet den Kern von Innovationen und entsteht aus kulturellen Quellen, die als kulturelle Konfigurationen analysiert werden. Die Relevanz dieser kulturellen Konstellationen für das Innovationsgeschehen - im Unterschied zu technischen oder politischen Aspekten - ist der Gegenstand der Forschung. Dabei gelten drei Prozesse als entscheidend für die Qualität und Anschlussfähigkeit von Innovationen: 1) die ständige Variation kultureller Selbstverständlichkeiten, 2) Prozesse der Bewertung als Neuheit und 3) Spannungszustände, die in und zwischen Kulturen auftreten. Das Zusammenspiel dieser drei Prozesse, so die These, bestimmt das Spektrum und die Reichweite der Innovationen. Die empirischen Felder des Forschungsprogramms sind aus der räumlichen, interaktiven und zeitlichen Dimensionierung kultureller Konfigurationen hergeleitet. "The discussion paper develops, in its first part, the research program of the unit. The second part of the paper presents six projects, as well as two dissertations linked to the program. It is assumed that newness is at the core of innovations and emerges in cultural configurations which are identified as cultural sources. The relevance of such cultural factors, as opposed to the influence of technical or political aspects, is the focus of research. Three kinds of processes determine the quality and the connectivity of innovations: 1) the continuous variation of shared cultural semantics and practices, 2) processes of evaluating newness and 2) states of tension in and between cultures. The interplay of these three processes, it is argued, determines the spectrum and the spread of successful innovations. The empirical streams of the research program are deduced from the spatial, interactive and temporal dimension of cultural configurations. In each stream, two projects are located, focused on different orders of magnitude." (author's abstract)
