Introduction to the KWALON Experiment: Discussions on Qualitative Data Analysis Software by Developers and Users

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag skizzieren wir unsere Motivation als Betreiber/innen kooperierender europäischer Netzwerke, diese Schwerpunktausgabe und die in ihr dokumentierte Tagung gemeinsam zu initiieren und umzusetzen. Am "KWALON-Experiment" beteiligten sich fünf Software-Entwickler/innen, indem sie ein Datenset zur Finanzkrise 2008-2009 analysierten, das wir ihnen zur Verfügung gestellt hatten. Zusätzlich wurden Software-Nutzer/innen eingeladen, ihre Erfahrungen mit qualitativer Datenanalyse-Software zu beschreiben und zu reflektieren. Im Folgenden stellen wir zunächst das "Experiment", seine "Regeln" sowie die von uns eingebrachten Forschungsfragen und Refexionsanstöße vor. Danach beschreiben wir das Datenset und die Erfahrungen, die wir aus dem "Experiment" gewonnen haben.

In this introduction to the KWALON Experiment and related conference, we describe the motivations of the collaborating European networks in organising this joint endeavour. The KWALON Experiment consisted of five developers of Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software analysing a dataset regarding the financial crisis in the time period 2008-2009, provided by the conference organisers. Besides this experiment, researchers were invited to present their reflective papers on the use of QDA software. This introduction gives a description of the experiment, the "rules", research questions and reflective points, as well as a full description of the dataset and search rules used, and our reflection on the lessons learned. The related conference is described, as are the papers which are included in this FQS issue.

En esta introducción al Experimento KWALON y la conferencia vinculada, describimos las motivaciones de las redes europeas que colaboraron al organizar este esfuerzo conjunto. El Experimento KWALON consistió en cinco desarrolladores de software de Análisis Cualitativo de Datos (ACD) analizando un conjunto de datos relativos a la crisis financiera entre 2008-2009, proporcionados por los organizadores de la conferencia. Además de este experimento, se invitó a investigadores a presentar sus trabajos de reflexión sobre el uso de software de ACD. Esta introducción brinda una descripción del experimento, las "reglas", las preguntas de investigación y puntos de reflexión, así como una descripción del conjunto de datos y las reglas de búsqueda utilizadas, y nuestras reflexiones sobre las lecciones aprendidas. Se describe la conferencia y los artículos que se incluyen en este volumen FQS.
