The economic crisis though the eyes of Transana

Abstract

For the KWALON 2010 conference, several software representatives were given a common data set consisting of text and media files about the financial crisis of 2008 – 2009. This paper focuses on the process of analyzing the media files in this data set using Transana, a software package designed for the transcription and qualitative analysis of video and audio data. The authors describe several styles of transcription used in the process of making sense of the data, the selection and coding of analytically interesting segments of the media files, and working with coded data to develop a coherent narrative from this data. They also describe their collaborative process, as facilitated by the software, and how that affected the analysis of the data. Finally, the authors describe the results of their analysis in terms of the multi-layered narrative of the data, and discuss the limitations of that analysis.

Para la conferencia KWALON 2010, a varios representantes de software se les dio un conjunto de datos común, que consiste en archivos de texto y multimedia sobre la crisis financiera de 2008-2009. Este artículo se centra en el proceso de analizar los archivos multimedia en este conjunto de datos usando Transana, un paquete de software diseñado para la transcripción y análisis cualitativo de datos de audio y video. Los autores describen varios estilos de transcripción usados en el proceso de hacer sentido de los datos, la selección y codificación de los segmentos analíticamente interesantes de los archivos multimedia, y trabajan con los datos codificados para desarrollar una narrativa coherente. También describen su proceso de colaboración, tal cual fue facilitado por el software y como eso afectó el análisis de los datos. Finalmente, los autores describen los resultados de su análisis en términos de la narrativa en múltiples capas de los datos, y discuten las limitaciones de tal análisis.

Im Vorfeld der KWALON 2010-Konferenz erhielten verschiedene Software-Entwickler/innen ein Datenset aus Text- und Multimediadateien zur Finanzkrise 2008-2009. In diesem Beitrag beschäftigen wir uns mit der Analyse der Multimediadateien mittels Transana, eine Software für die Transkription und Analyse von Video- und Audiodateien. Wir beschreiben unterschiedliche Transkriptionsstile, die wir im Verlauf der Arbeit mit den Daten genutzt haben, die Auswahl und Kodierung spezifischer, analytisch besonders interessanter Segmente und schließlich unseren Versuch, aus den kodierten Daten ein kohärentes Narrativ zu generieren. Wir diskutieren auch unseren gemeinsamen Arbeitsprozess und die Art und Weise, wie er durch die Software unterstützt wurde bzw. wie dies wiederum Einfluss auf die Datenanalyse genommen hat. Am Ende skizzieren wir unsere Ergebnisse und inhärente Begrenzungen unserer Analyse.
