'Starting from impressionistic and empirical observations of the asymmetry between left and right in the perception of visual stimuli, this study tackles the question of whether a preferred orientation also affects the perception of illustrations in face-to-face interviews, and thus the use of such illustrations in survey research. Sixteen questionnaire experiments with five different scales were conducted, varying in orientation (horizontal vs. vertical) and direction (left to right vs. right to left; going down vs. going up) of the scales. Results show that respondents, when looking at visual scales, evidently follow a natural pattern of glaze, which unconsciously affects their answers beyond all rational processes of thinking and decision making that cognitive methodology usually looks at.'
