Researching practice and practicing research reflexively: conceptualizing the relationship between research partners and researchers in longitudinal studies

Abstract

Im vergangenen Jahrzehnt hat die Bedeutung reflexiver Organisationsforschung stark zugenommen. Die Diskussion zeigt die hohe Bedeutung der eigenen Interpretationen und der Veröffentlichung von Forschungsergebnissen. Demgegenüber steht die Beziehung zwischen den Forschungspartner/innen in der Praxis und den Forschenden kaum im Fokus der Betrachtung. Jedoch ist diese Beziehung die Basis, auf der Daten generiert werden und Interpretationen entstehen. In diesem Beitrag verfolgen wir das Ziel, eine methodologische Heuristik als Orientierung anzubieten, welche diese Beziehung zum Ausgangspunkt nimmt. Die von der Theorie sozialer Systeme inspirierte "reflexive system theory heuristic" wird empirisch anhand einer longitudinalen Einzelfallstudie zu einem Veränderungsprozess in einem Krankenhaus illustriert. Die Heuristik unterstützt die Beobachtung und Erklärung der Dynamik in der Feldbeziehung und hilft dabei, den Status der forscherischen Ergebnisse zu klären. Die beforschte Praxis und die Forschungspraxis werden als Kommunikationssystem konzeptualisiert. Forschung erhält damit eine generative Komponente und wird als reflexiver Zusammenhang aufgefasst. Die Berücksichtigung des jeweiligen Kontextes von Praxis und von Wissenschaft erlaubt es zudem, die bisherigen Erkenntnisse zu reflexiver Organisationsforschung einzubinden. Für die Forschung im Bereich der Systemtheorie wiederum kann die hier vorgestellte Heuristik als Ausgangspunkt für eine bislang marginalisierte methodologische Diskussion dienen.

La reflexividad ha cobrado considerable significación en los estudios organizacionales durante la última década. La discusión brinda iluminadoras reflexiones al interpretar los hallazgos y presentarlos a la comunidad académica. Pero la relación entre los compañeros de la investigación en la práctica e investigadores permanece fuera de foco. Sin embargo, brinda los fundamentos desde los cuales emergen los datos y la interpretación. Este artículo busca desarrollar una heurística metodológica inspirada por la teoría de sistemas sociales para conceptualizar las bases relacionales de la investigación longitudinal. Se ilustra empíricamente esta “heurística reflexiva de teoría de sistema” al reconstruir el proceso de investigación de un caso de estudio singular sobre el proceso de cambio en un hospital. La heurística ayuda a observar y explicar la relación dinámica en el campo y reconocer explícitamente el estatuto de los hallazgos empíricos al comprender la investigación como una actividad generadora. La heurística conceptualiza lo investigado y las prácticas de investigación como sistemas de comunicación, pues desarrolla consistentemente una aproximación reflexiva para la investigación de campo. Al tomar en consideración tanto la práctica como el contexto académico, la heurística puede extenderse a las ideas que emergen de la discusión en torno a la reflexividad. Para la investigación de sistemas sociales acerca de organizaciones, la heurística brinda un punto de arranque para cultivar una discusión metodológica.

Reflexivity has gained considerable significance in organization studies over the last decade. The discussion provides significant insight into interpreting one's findings and into presenting them to the academic community. But, the relationship between research partners in practice and researchers remains less in focus. Nevertheless, it provides the foundation from which data and interpretations emerge. To provide an orientation, this paper aims to develop a methodological heuristic inspired by social systems theory to conceptualize the relational foundation of longitudinal research. This "reflexive system theory heuristic" is illustrated empirically by reconstructing the research process of a longitudinal single case study on a change process in a hospital. The heuristic helps to observe and explain the dynamic relationship in the field and to explicitly acknowledge the status of empirical findings when understanding research as a generative activity. The heuristic conceptualizes the researched and research practices as communication systems, thus consistently developing a reflexive approach for field research. By taking into account the practice as well as the academic context, the heuristic can be extended to the insights drawn from the discussion on reflexivity. For social systems research on organizations, the heuristic provides a starting point to foster a methodological discussion.
