Current discussions on generational issues are not only characterized by a considerable degree of inaccuracy, but also by the fact that existing data are often used to generate unilateral generalizations. This article is supposed to provide an overview regarding the theoretical background of generational research and demographic changes; subsequently, research results will be presented on the climate of generational relations on the societal level and intergenerational relations within the family, as well as in the workplace. It will be demonstrated that most elderly are well integrated into their families, fulfilling important tasks there. This scenario is encountered, even though multiple generations are only cohabiting to a marginal percentage, and their relationships are often rather ambivalent. The latter becomes manifest in the fact that in terms of attitudes the family is seen as the major setting of generational conflicts. Generational relations outside the family reflect a slightly different image, as they are less likely to be characterized by conflicts versus a lack of communication. Even if the relevance of belonging to a specific generational movement is declining, aging of the baby boom generation is still seen as a certain risk for generational relations in the future.... view less
