'Women with Turkish origins - how do they perceive their roles in family and in society? Do they decide autonomously? Which plans and expectations concerning the future do mothers and daughters have? Are there intergenerational differences? This article tries to answer these questions. After an analysis of interviews conducted with 11 pairs of mothers and daughters, following topics turned out to be the most important: the priority for the mothers is to provide an excellent education for their daughters. Furthermore, the analysis emphasizes the necessity of taking responsibility for one's own life and for the family, and, finally the importance of autonomy regarding life decisions. Despite general transmissions of attitudes and values one can observe a shift from mothers, for whom responsibility for the family is the most important personal duty, to daughters, who tend to put more emphasis on an autonomous life.'
