Living in and out of the host society: aspects of Nepalese migrants' experience of division in Qatar

Abstract

This article examines the place that Nepalese immigrant workers occupy in Qatar, a country where migrants' social and spatial positions are determined by their nationality and qualifications. The article uses visual images, mainly photographs, to illustrate the divided nature of society in Qatar. While trying to adopt the migrants' point of view, the author spent time both in the place where they live, that is the labor camps, and in central Doha where migrants spend their free time. Thus, except for the work place, pictures were taken both in private and public spaces to outline migrants' living spaces. They illustrate the strong constraints migrants have to face in everyday life. For the author himself, pictures are a means of taking a closer look at these places, once back from a field trip. By playing with different scales, zooming from the labor camp setting to the details of how rooms are arranged, pictures enable us to grasp the multiple facets of segregation and the way Nepalese migrant workers draw on their own resources to make foreign places their own. However, the adjustments made to these living spaces continue to reflect their lowly position in a highly segmented society.

Este artículo examina el lugar que ocupan los trabajadores nepaleses inmigrantes en Qatar, un país donde las posiciones sociales y espaciales de los inmigrantes están determinadas por su nacionalidad y capacitación. El artículo utiliza imágenes visuales, principalmente fotografías, para ilustrar la naturaleza dividida de la sociedad en Qatar. Mientras intenta adoptar el punto de vista de los inmigrantes, el autor pasa tiempo tanto en el lugar en donde viven, que son los campos de trabajo y en Doha central donde los inmigrantes pasan su tiempo libre. Así, a excepción del lugar de trabajo, las imágenes fueron tomadas en espacios públicos y privados para delinear los espacios donde viven los inmigrantes. Ellas ilustran la fuerte restricción que los inmigrantes tienen que soportar en la vida diaria. Para el autor mismo, las imágenes son los medios de echar un vistazo más cercano a estos lugares, una vez que se regresa del viaje de campo. Jugando con diversas escalas, enfocando desde el campo de trabajo a los detalles de cómo se arreglan los cuartos, las imágenes nos permiten capturar las múltiples facetas de la segregación y la manera en que los trabajadores inmigrantes nepaleses trazan con sus propios recursos los lugares extranjeros para hacerlos propios. Sin embargo, los ajustes hechos a los espacios en donde viven siguen reflejando su precaria posición en una sociedad altamente segmentada.

Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen nepalesischer Immigrant/innen in Katar, einem Land, in dem soziale und räumliche Positionierungen von Migrant/innen durch deren Nationalität und Qualifikationen bestimmt werden. Es werden Abbildungen, zumeist Fotografien verwandt, um den gespalteten Charakter der Gesellschaft zu veranschaulichen. Im Versuch, die Perspektive der Migrant/innen nachzuvollziehen, besuchte ich sowohl deren Arbeitsumgebung, sog. Arbeitslager, als auch Doha, den Ort, an dem sie ihre Freizeit verbringen. Abgesehen von den Arbeitslagern sind die Fotografien in den privaten und öffentlichen Lebensräumen der Migrant/innen entstanden, und sie dokumentieren die massiven Beeinträchtigungen, die deren Leben durchziehen. Die Fotografien boten mir auch eine Möglichkeit, diese Orte nach meiner Rückreise genauer zu untersuchen. Indem ich unterschiedliche Skalierungen genutzt habe, z.B. von dem Setting eines Arbeitslagers hin zu Details von Raumeinrichtungen, können solche Fotografien sowohl die multiplen Facetten der Segregation eindrücklich verdeutlichen als auch die Versuche der Migrant/innen, sich fremde Orte mit nur sehr beschränkten Ressourcen anzueignen. Zugleich stehen diese Aneignungsversuche auch für die niedrige Position der Migrant/innen in einer hoch-segmentierten Gesellschaft.
