Representing immigration detainees: the juxtaposition of image and sound in "border country"

Dieser Beitrag dokumentiert vier Jahre Forschung (2003-2007) zu meiner Ausstellung und meinem Buch "Border Country", die die Erfahrungen immigrierter Häftlinge (deren Asyl-Ersuchen abgelehnt wurde oder die sich in einem Berufungsverfahren befinden) in britischen "Immigration Removal Centres" behandeln. Ich greife in diesem Zusammenhang auch auf eine frühere Ausstellung "Homes and Gardens: Documenting the Invisible" zurück, die sich mit der Unterdrückung durch das Milosevic-Regime im Kosovo beschäftigte, und auf die Schwierigkeiten, die mit dem Versuch einhergingen, versteckte Gewalt darzustellen, und die zur Verwendung einer sehr spezifischen Ton-/Bild-Struktur im Rahmen der Ausstellung führten. Ich zeige dann, wie ich eine ähnliche Ton-/Bild-Struktur für "Border Country" genutzt habe und veranschauliche die damit verbundenen ästhetischen und konzeptuellen Implikationen. Ich diskutiere in diesem Zusammenhang auch, warum ich mich im Verlauf der Arbeit entschieden habe, den Fokus der Ausstellung von zunächst einem auf schließlich elf Häftlinge auszuweiten und die Fotos der Häftlinge aus ethischen und inhaltlichen Gründen zu entfernen. Am Ende stand eine Juxtaposition von Fotos der "Immigration Removal Centres" und von deren Einrichtung (ohne Menschen) mit den Soundtracks der Stimmen der Inhaftierten. Diese Stimmen konnten im Rahmen der Ausstellung in Hörkabinen oder im Buch mittels der beigefügten CD rezipiert werden. Als Teil meiner Forschung reflektiere ich auch die von mir genutzte Interviewmethodik und Fragen des Machtungleichgewichts zwischen Fotografin/Künstlerin einerseits und den inhaftierten Asylsuchenden andererseits.

This paper discusses the four-year (2003-2007) research process towards my exhibition and publication "Border Country", which focuses on the experience of immigration detainees (appellant or "failed" asylum seekers) in the UK's "immigration removal centres". I discuss my earlier exhibition "Homes and Gardens: Documenting the Invisible" which focused on the repression in Kosovo under the Milošević regime, and the difficulties of representing the "hidden violence" which led to the adoption of a particular sound/image structure for the exhibition. I discuss how I then chose to work with a similar sound/image framework for "Border Country" and the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved. I discuss the decision to expand the focus of the exhibition from one individual detainee to eleven, and to omit the photographic portraits of detainees from the exhibition for ethical and conceptual reasons. I finally produced a juxtaposition of photographs of immigration removal centre landscapes and interiors (devoid of people) with a soundtrack of oral testimonies. The voices of individual detainees could be heard at listening stations within the gallery spaces or on the publication's audio CD. Within this research process I also discuss my interview methodology and questions of power imbalance between photographer/artist and incarcerated asylum seekers.

Este documento discute el proceso de cuatro años (2003-2007) de investigación para la exposición y publicación mi País fronterizo, el cual se centra en la experiencia de los inmigrantes detenidos (demandantes o buscadores "fallidos" de asilo) en los centros de expulsión de inmigrantes del Reino Unido. Discuto mi exposición anterior Hogares y jardines: Documentación de lo invisible la cual se centra en la represión en Kosovo bajo el régimen de Milosevic, y las dificultades de representar la "violencia oculta" que condujo a la adopción de una particular estructura sonido/imagen para la exposición. Discuto cómo entonces elegí trabajar con un marco similar de sonido/imagen para País Fronterizo y las consideraciones estéticas y conceptuales implicadas. Discuto la decisión para ampliar el foco de la exposición de un individuo detenido a once y para omitir de la exposición los retratos fotográficos de los detenidos por razones éticas y conceptuales. Finalmente produje una yuxtaposición de fotografías de los paisajes y de los interiores del centro para la expulsión de inmigrantes (desprovistos de gente) con una banda sonora de testimonios orales. Se pueden escuchar las voces de los individuos detenidos en las estaciones de sonido dentro de los espacios de la galería o en el CD de audio de la publicación. Dentro de este proceso de la investigación también discuto mi metodología de entrevista y cuestiono el desequilibrio de poder entre el fotógrafo/artista y los buscadores de asilo encarcelados.
