"The paper shows how to observe the mode of information processing of people responding to survey questions by measuring their response latencies. It reports about a study analyzing data of a 2005 German nationwide CATI-survey. In this study response latency measurements were used to explain intended and actual money donations as a special type of social behavior. When modeling this behavior we followed the specifications of the theory of reasoned action (TRA). In addition, we integrated the mode of information processing into these models as an extension of classical TRA-modeling. The results of our analysis show an increase of the predictive power attributed to behavioral attitudes and intentions when respondents` information processing is performed in a spontaneous instead of a reflexive mode. However, the TRA-effect of subjective norms acts independently of this influence. Our research indicates a possible connection between classical attitude research and actual research on dual process attitude models by specifying response latencies as an important component of attitude-behavior-modeling."
