%X All Georgian parties support a pro-western foreign policy. By appearing to support closer ties with Russia and Armenia, while questioning projects being developed with Azerbaijan, the new government seemed to place in doubt the future of the pro-West orientation. Critics of the government have pointed out that conducting bilateral relations with Russia could weaken Georgia’s position. Ultimately, only the establishment of secure democratic institutions in Georgia will assure the success of its efforts to join the West.
