Die Rückkehr der Armen? Plebejanismus und die politische Ökonomie der Radikaldemokratie

Abstract

Ökonomische Fragen spielen in radikalen Demokratietheorien, wenn überhaupt, eine untergeordnete Rolle. Was fehlt, ist eine ernsthafte Reflexion über die materiellen Voraussetzungen und Konsequenzen radikaldemokratischer Grundannahmen und Zielbeschreibungen. Die Tradition des Plebejanismus hält Ressourcen bereit, um die ökonomische Leerstelle der Radikaldemokratie zu adressieren. Während die liberalen und republikanischen Varianten Plebejanismus als Addendum zum liberal-demokratischen Status Quo verstehen, ist es der Anspruch eines radikaldemokratischen Plebejanismus, oligarchische Strukturen nicht nur zu reformieren, sondern abzuschaffen. Eine konkrete Vision plebejischer Demokratie bleiben radikaldemokratische Theorien bisher jedoch schuldig. Nur wenn Plebejanismus nicht als rein symbolischer Akt der Selbstemanzipation verstanden und die materielle Dimension der Kategorie der Vielen anerkannt wird, werden erste Umrisse einer politischen Ökonomie der Radikaldemokratie erkennbar.

Economic questions play a subordinate role, if any, in theories of radical democracy. What is missing is a serious reflection on the material preconditions and consequences of radical democracy's basic assumptions and goals. The tradition of plebeianism holds resources to address the economic deficit of radical democracy. While the liberal and republican variants understand plebeianism as an addendum to the liberal-democratic status quo, the objective of radical-democratic plebeianism is to not only reform oligarchic structures, but to abolish them. However, theories of radical democracy have so far failed to develop a concrete vision of plebeian democracy. Only if plebeianism is not understood as a purely symbolic act of self-emancipation and the material dimension of the category of the many is recognized, will the first outlines of a political economy of radical democracy come into view.
