Wirtschaftsdemokratie als Einübungspraxis

Abstract

Im Hinblick auf die Aufgabe, die normativen Grundlagen einer Demokratisierung der Wirtschaft auszuarbeiten, entwickelt der Aufsatz eine materialistische Tugendethik. Dieser Ansatz betrachtet die materiellen Grundbedingungen des Wirtschaftens als prägend für sittliche Dispositionen. Er greift die aristotelische Idee auf, dass Tugenden in der Dauer der Zeit ausgebildet und trainiert werden müssen. Wirtschaftsdemokratische Überlegungen von John Stuart Mill, John Dewey, Carole Pateman und Axel Honneth enthalten Ansätze dieser Ethik, doch sie beleuchten oft nicht ausreichend, worin genau die Prägekraft ökonomischer Strukturen besteht. Der Aufsatz schließt diese Lücke. Die Schlussfolgerung lautet, dass diejenigen sozialen Kontexte, in denen wir zur Kooperation genötigt sind, zu einem Einübungsfeld demokratischer Dispositionen werden sollten - und dieser Kontext ist der ökonomische Bereich. Autoritäre Strukturen in der Wirtschaft gefährden hingegen die politische Demokratie. Dieser Ansatz liefert ein wichtiges Argument gegen die Idee einer grundlegenden Trennung von demokratischer Politik und undemokratischer Wirtschaft, wie sie von John Rawls und Jürgen Habermas nahegelegt wird.

Fleshing out the normative foundations for democratizing the economy, the paper develops a materialist virtue ethics, which considers the material conditions of economic practices as formative for moral dispositions. It draws on the Aristotelian idea that virtues must be cultivated and practiced over time. Considerations from John Stuart Mill, John Dewey, Carole Pateman, and Axel Honneth concerning economic democracy contain elements of this ethics but often do not adequately spell out how economic structures shape moral dispositions. The paper addresses this gap. It concludes that social contexts in which we are compelled to cooperate should become arenas for cultivating democratic dispositions - and this context is the economic sphere. Authoritarian structures in the economy, on the other hand, pose a threat to political democracy. This approach provides an important argument against the idea of a fundamental separation between a democratic polity and an undemocratic economy, as suggested by John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas.
