While using language, a person demonstrates metalinguistic ability when they separate the form of words from the meaning, break the word into parts, think about its components, and come up with their own "etymology".The article explores the nuances of the metalinguistic and psycholinguistic approaches to affixal morphemes as a grammatical category, emphasising the need for a multidisciplinary approach to linguistic phenomena.
