The Southern Gas Corridor was initiated by the European Commission to develop the necessary infrastructure between the wider Caspian region and Europe, in large part in order to diversify the EU’s supply of gas away from Russia. Given this goal, discussion of the corridor and its key pipeline, the Nabucco project, have been politicized from the very beginning.
