The current winds of change in the traditional air freight market can be divided into three main classifications. Firstly, there are the changes in the market structures of the airlines, air freight carriers and other services firms (transport, ground crew). In view of the attempts to liberalise the transport sector and also the rising customer demands, we can see a progressive concentration in this respect, which leads in all areas to major international companies with a simultaneous, increased market access by small companies on national markets. Secondly, we find new efforts by companies along the services chain. Airlines and freight carriers are making every effort to rationalise the value added chain with regard to new, standardised products and IT-related connections. In addition, they are also implementing changes throughout their entire corporate organisations. Large air transport firms in particular are trying to achieve direct customer access by entering into close bonds with freight carriers. Thirdly, airlines around the world organise their air traffic as a hub system. This lends added importance to the selected hub airport, and puts pressure on them to enlarge. At the same time, it downgrades the importance of other airports, making them simply regional suppliers with a large proportion of freight transported by lorry, while undercutting the possible flight capacities.... view less
