'The conflict between the self-proclaimed 'Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublika' (PMR) in the east of the Republic of Moldova and the Moldovan government is one of the most complex of the many hitherto unresolved secession conflicts in the successor states to the Soviet Union. The present report analyses the origins of the conflict and the factors conditioning its development and attempts, on this basis, to sound out the prospects for a settlement. The report is based on international secondary literature and on the analysis of archives and of articles published in the national and regional press, but also on talks and interviews conducted by the author with scholars, politicians and representatives of the administrations, international and societal organisations on both sides of the conflict during a ten-month fact-finding visit to the Republic of Moldova and in particular to the PMR.'
