"Referring to the scientific, political and public discussion about the German 'Hauptschule' school form and its various structural problems, the following article argues that besides consideration of the Hauptschule from a structural viewpoint, a pupil-centered biographical approach can provide important insights for youth and empirical educational research. Using two contrasting case studies we show differences in how individual pupils with rising and falling school careers reflect their views on the Hauptschule and demonstrate the biographical risks and chances that can evolve from attending the Hauptschule."
