"An experimental design is supposed to search the influence of macro social stress on the individual work performance. Within a pre-questionnaire concerning threat by the economical situation, 121 students were divided into macro socially threatened and non macro socially threatened. The students were asked then at the computer to improve the image of Hamburg university students by solving creativity tasks. In half of the cases the solving was prevented by a computer crash. Dependent variables were measured affiliating with the verbal creativity test (vkt) by Schoppe and the question for extra help by data input. Students who felt macro socially threatened and experienced a computer crash did a worse performance concerning the vkt compared to all other conditions. Both groups with a computer crash refused significantly more to help than the others. The results suggest that activating the feeling of macro social stress by an additional stressor produces a lasting state of stress which evokes helplessness and worse cognitive performance. A brief state of stress on the other hand does not influence the cognitive performance but coping occurs by refusing to help."[author´s abstract]... view less
