On December 11th 2006, direct elections of regional heads were held in Aceh. Almost two years after the devastating tsunami and 16 months after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Helsinki, the elections have improved the chances for a lasting peace between the Indonesian government and the GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka – Free Aceh Movement). In particular at the provincial level, members of the movement have succeeded. National political parties and the government in Jakarta suffered defeat.
