abstract = {On December 11th 2006, direct elections of regional heads were held in Aceh. Almost two years
after the devastating tsunami and 16 months after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding
in Helsinki, the elections have improved the chances for a lasting peace between the Indonesian
government and the GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka – Free Aceh Movement). In particular at the
provincial level, members of the movement have succeeded. National political parties and the
government in Jakarta suffered defeat. Moreover, the results will likely have an impact upon the
balance of power within the GAM. The Sweden-based older generation probably will now have
less influence on the organization.},
