Der Verfasser kombiniert die autobiographischen Erfahrungen eines im totalitären System geformten Mannes (Oktober-Kind im Kindergarten, Pionier in der Schule, Komsomolze an der Universität, Parteimitglied und Mitglied der Propagandaabteilung) mit akademischer Kontemplation. Er stellt den allmählichen Bruch der sowjetischen Intellektuellen mit dem System dar und skizziert die Entwicklung der Sowjetunion von der Oktoberrevolution 1917 bis zu ihrem Zerfall 1991.
