Abstract Die Globalisierung beeinflusst die Entwicklung von Städten und Regionen. Vor allem eine gute Erreichbarkeit von Städten und Regionen, wie auch die Erreichbarkeit anderer Zentren aus diesen Regionen und Städten spielen eine große Rolle. In der deutschen Raumordnung wird diese Anforderung durch die Diskussion der metropolitanen Gatewayfunktion aufgegriffen und vor allem durch Infrastrukturstandorte operationalisiert. In diesem Beitrag wird auf Grundlage des Ansatzes von Castells eine Erweiterung des Verständnisses der Gatewayfunktion vorgeschlagen. Auf der Grundlage von Castells' Differenzierung zwischen unterschiedlichen layers of flows wird die Bedeutung einer Trennung von Infrastruktur und sozioökonomischen Austauschprozessen in den Fokus gerückt, um ein umfassendes Verständnis von Städten als Knoten zu diskutieren.

Processes of globalization influence the development of cities and regions. Global accessibility of cities and regions and access to other places are most important aspects in conjunction with processes of economic globalization. In German spatial planning this aspect is discussed in conjunction with the so called metropolitan gateway function. However, this function is specified mainly through technical infrastructure. In this paper a widening of the gateway function is proposed on the basis of Castells. Castells' approach differentiates between each other complementing layers of flow and therefore enables the differentiation between infrastructure and socio-economic exchanges to discus cities as hubs and nodes in a broader context.
