'The survey of the East German cohort 1971 is an elaborate retrospective life course study, collected within the context of the German Life History Study 'East German Life Courses after Unification' at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin. Due to the long period between sampling (October 1990) and interviewing (May 1996 to January 1998) and due to the unusually high number of refusals, selected marginal distributions of the East German birth cohort 1971 sample and the Mikrozensus sample (official statistical census in Germany) from 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1996 were compared in order to identify any distortions in the 1971 sample. One main result from this comparison is that, apart from divergences characteristic of life course surveys, the survey of the East German birth cohort 1971 has deviations linked to problems in tracing current addresses. Provided the identified selection bias is taken into account, these deviations are not important for the analysis of interactions between variables (and their changes over time).'
