In the television programme 'Traumhochzeit' (Dream wedding), the winning couples that are presented are not getting 'really' married in front of the cameras. The wedding is only simulated. The real marriage (with legal consequences) is to be celebrated later. And yet the couples involved feel already truly married after the fake televised wedding. The reasons for this are discussed in this article. By so doing, the ability of television to create a quite efficient magic field is demonstrated. In addition, the contribution of television to the current re-mythologisation of life which can be observed is emphasized. Finally, the issue of television as a modern functional substitute to religion is brought up: do television and religion have the same functional value or are they just related somehow?... view less
