One of the strongest assumptions in dance research is the fact that dance by its very nature is something that goes beyond speech. Depreciating or neglecting metaphorical expressions and the way they are used, this view implies that ordinary (standard) language must fail in describing dance. This allows to uncritically create myths. Modern dance, for example, is said to be revolutionary by definition. Systematically analysing the metaphors in Isadora Duncan's published writings, her being one of the protagonists and the so-called "pioneer" and "mother" of modern dance, it can be shown that revolution is only one amongst twelve, extremely diverse metaphorical concepts she used. These can take both modernist and anti-modernist connotations. The widely accepted myths of revolution and femininity not only associated with Duncan's but modern dance in general are to be questioned. Furthermore, it will be argued that (modern) dance can be interpreted as an (in-)visible religion of the 20th century.... view less
