'The social functions of art are manifold. Based on an analysis of the assignment of the attribute of 'art', of the economic dimension of artworks and of their role as a catalyst for social interaction, the following article focuses on three aspects of art: the function of art as a language and therefore as a means for articulating individual and collective identities that seek public recognition; artwork as private goods and collective goods; and art as a medium for reflection and knowledge creation. The article discusses the political implications of rejecting or accepting demands of art, the access and the right of use of art performance, and the importance of art as a source for discourse and innovation.'
