Since the sixties of the past century, the major part of German trade and industrial teachers has graduated from technical and scientific universities, after studying there technological and related subjects, also – as the central disciplines of their preparation on their future occupational roles – some social science and vocational education. But what about the competencies of their university teachers? Concerning the careers of the latter: How to refute the sarcasm of the malicious 'proverb': "Who can, does. Who cannot, teaches. And who cannot teach, teaches how to teach"? In order to provide for their necessary experiences as teachers of vocational schools and of related training institutions, performing thus tasks like tho se for which' performance they have to prepare their students; and as apprentices and skilled workers of workshops and factories, executing jobs similar to those, for which' accurate execution the latter will be responsible to qualify their prospective pupils, and referring particularly to the hitherto mostly neglected dimensions of these environments, namely: to the social atmosphere of the settings just mentioned above and to the typical habits of the members of the related occupational communities, the author tries to specify and to legitimate the respective requirements (1), to propose measures suitable to prevent and or/and compensate disadvantages (2); to point at relevant topics of desirable future exploration and research (3).... view less
