Berlin Needs to Offer Itself as a Useful Partner - to Trump or to Harris

Abstract

Als Präsident hat Donald Trump den Wert der transatlantischen Bündnisse offen und konsequent infrage gestellt. Für Europa ist das Szenario, dass er in einer Zeit immenser sicherheitspolitischer und wirtschaftlicher Herausforderungen ins Weiße Haus zurückkehren könnte, beängstigend. Vizepräsidentin Kamala Harris hingegen hat in ihrer Kongressrede den Wert der US-Bündnisse und US-Führungsrolle unterstrichen. Die Regierenden in Berlin und im restlichen Europa werden gute Pläne und Initiativen für die Zusammenarbeit brauchen - und keine der Optionen beinhaltet eine Rückkehr zum Status quo von 2021.

As president, Donald Trump openly and consistently questioned the value of the transatlantic alliances. For Europe, the possibility that he might return to the White House at a time of immense security and economic challenges is daunting. Vice President Kamala Harris, in contrast, has underscored the value of US alliances and leadership in her convention speech. Berlin and Europe will need plans and initiative, and none of the options include returning to the 2021 status quo.
