Review: Aaron Ben-Ze'ev (2004). Love Online. Emotions on the Internet

Abstract

Die Monografie von Aaron ZE'EV, Professor für Philosophie und Kodirektor des Zentrums für interdisziplinäre Emotionsforschung an der Universität Haifa, hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Besonderheiten von romantischer Liebe und sexuellem Begehren im Internet herauszuarbeiten. Der Autor versteht diese Thematik als einen Spezialfall seines Forschungsfeldes, nämlich der Untersuchung von Emotionen im Alltag. Online-Liebe und Cybersex werden theoretisch als ambivalente oder sogar paradoxe emotionale Phänomene konzeptualisiert. Insgesamt verortet ZE'EV computervermittelte zwischenmenschliche Interaktionen und Beziehungen in der Mitte zwischen reiner Phantasiewelt einerseits und herkömmlicher Beziehungsrealität andererseits. Der Autor stellt keine eigenen Primärdaten vor, sondern bezieht sich auf eine Reihe vorliegender empirischer Studien und arbeitet vor allem mit Zitaten aus Erfahrungsberichten und Leitfaden-Interviews. Für die Zukunft prognostiziert ZE'EV eine Zunahme erotischer und romantischer Flexibilität durch niederschwellige Online-Erfahrungen, die zur Labilisierung der Ehe beitragen könnten. Interessant ist der Forschungsüberblick aus philosophischer Perspektive mit dem Bemühen um starke Systematisierung, welche jedoch teilweise in theoretisch und empirisch problematische Simplifizierungen führt.

This monograph, by Aaron ZE'EV, Professor of Philosophy and Co-Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Emotions at the University of Haifa, deals with the peculiarities of romantic love and sexual desire on the Internet. The author interprets the topic as a special case within his research area, namely the study of emotions in everyday life. Online love and cybersex are conceptualized as ambivalent, if not paradoxical, phenomena. According to ZE'EV, computer-mediated interpersonal interactions provide an intermediate area of experiencing that lies between solitary fantasy and social reality. The author does not present new data, but refers to a variety of published papers, mostly based on personal narratives and semi-structured interviews. Due to unrestrained online experiences, ZE'EV predicts an increase in erotic and romantic flexibility that might degrade the institution of marriage. The book presents a fruitful overview of research from a philosophical point of view. The author's effort to conceptually systemize the experience of online love and cybersex unfortunately sometimes leads to simplification.

Esta monografía de ZE'EV, Profesor de Filosofía y Co-Director del Centro para la Investigación Interdisciplinaria de las Emociones en la Universidad de Haifa, aborda las peculiaridades del amor romántico y del deseo sexual en Internet. El autor interpreta este tópico como un caso especial de su área de investigación: el estudio de las emociones en la vida cotidiana. El amor en línea y el cibersexo son considerados como fenómenos ambivalentes, si no paradójicos. De acuerdo a ZE'EV, las interacciones interpersonales mediadas por computadora proveen un área intermedia de experiencia que se ubica entre la fantasía solitaria y la realidad social. El autor no presenta nuevos datos, pero refiere a una variedad de artículos publicados, la mayor parte basados en narrativas personales y en entrevistas semiestruturadas. Debido a lo incontrolado de las experiencias en línea, ZE'EV predice un incremento en la flexibilidad erótica y romántica que podría degradar la institución del matrimonio. El libro presenta una fructífera introducción desde el punto de vista filosófico a esta investigación. Desafortunadamente, el esfuerzo del autor por sistematizar conceptualmente la experiencia del amor en línea y el cibersexo algunas veces conduce a la simplificación.
