All Power to the People: Huey P. Newton und die radikale Demokratie

Abstract

Huey P. Newton war der zentrale Vordenker der Black Panther Party und hat ein reichhaltiges, zu Unrecht beinahe vergessenes theoretisches Werk hinterlassen. Dieser Beitrag argumentiert dafür, seine politische Philosophie, seine Verzahnung von Theorie und Praxis und seine historische Rolle als Material anzuerkennen, das substanzielle Beiträge zu verschiedenen Debatten innerhalb der radikalen Demokratietheorie liefern kann. Dazu werden Newtons grundsätzliches Politikverständnis, seine Zeitdiagnose und sein politisches Programm im Angesicht dieser Diagnose vorgestellt und mit radikaldemokratischen Konzepten sowie politischen Visionen Chantal Mouffes in Verbindung gebracht.

Huey P. Newton was the main theoretician of the Black Panther Party and produced an extensive but, unjustly, almost forgotten theoretical corpus. This essay argues that Newton's political philosophy, the interconnectedness of his theory and practice and his historical role can make substantial contributions to certain debates within the theory of radical democracy. To do so, Newtons general understanding of the political process, the diagnosis of his times, and his political program concerning this diagnosis will be introduced and connected to the radical democratic concepts and political visions of Chantal Mouffe.
