Food security encompasses not only thorough and strategic planning for agriculture but also careful considerations for health and education. This article presents a brief overview of the issues in relation to policies and strategies to be addressed in Georgia and the Southern Caucasus that are aimed at ensuring food security and improving nutrition, the key for which is the improvement of the competitiveness of local farmers and the increase in local food production. This requires complex support policies and programs favoring small-scale farmers through providing resources and education, land reforms, promoting biodiversity, developing infrastructure, supporting growth in export of agricultural products as well as promoting and saturating local markets with locally produced quality and nutritious food.... view less
